Maxee's Music Career
Maxee became well-known in the mid-1990s. She formed the group Brownstone with singers Monica "Mimi" Doby and Nicci Gilbert. After an audition where they sang without music, the group signed with Michael Jackson's record label, MJJ Music. This label worked with Epic Records.
Brownstone's Success
The band released their first album, From the Bottom Up, in 1995. This album sold over a million copies, earning a platinum certification. This means it was very popular! They also received a Grammy Award nomination. This was for their song "If You Love Me". It was nominated for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Later, the group changed some members. They released a second album, Still Climbing, in 1997. This album was not as successful. After this, the group decided to stop making music together.
Solo Music Efforts
After Brownstone broke up, Maxee moved to London. In 2000, she signed with Mercury Records to start a solo career. Her first solo song was "When I Look Into Your Eyes." A special version of this song was made by producer Fred Jerkins III. It reached number 55 on the UK Singles Chart. Her next song, "This Is Where I Wanna Be," did not become popular. Because of this, her planned solo album was never released.
Maxee's Later Life and Death
Maxee was married to Danish record producer Carsten Schack. He was part of the music duo Soulshock and Karlin. Maxee and Carsten had one son named Nicholas Hojer.
On February 28, 2015, Maxee passed away after an accident in Los Angeles. She was 46 years old when she died in the hospital.
