Who Was Bruno Hoffmann?

Bruno Hoffmann was born in Stuttgart, Germany. His father was a director of church music, so Bruno grew up around music. He learned to play the piano and organ. But when he was 16 years old, he found something even more interesting: "musical glasses." This discovery started his lifelong journey to bring the beautiful sound of the glass harp back to life.

Mastering the Glass Harp

Bruno Hoffmann spent many years learning and mastering the glass harp. He found old music written for the instrument by famous composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He also found pieces by Johann Friedrich Reichardt, Karl Leopold Röllig, and others. Hoffmann didn't just play old music; he also encouraged new composers to write fresh songs for him.

He even wrote an article about the glass harmonica for a German music encyclopedia. This shows how much he knew about the instrument.

Building His Own Instrument

Starting in 1929, when he was just 16, Bruno Hoffmann began to design and build his own glass harps. His instruments were made of wine glasses set in a wooden box. To make music, he would rub the rims of the glasses with his fingers. This created a clear, almost magical sound.
