Bruno Kirby (born Bruno Giovanni Quidaciolu Jr.; April 28, 1949 – August 14, 2006) was an American actor. He was well-known for playing funny and sometimes grumpy characters in movies. You might remember him from films like City Slickers, When Harry Met Sally..., and Good Morning, Vietnam. He also lent his voice to Reginald Stout in the animated movie Stuart Little.

Early Life of Bruno Kirby

Bruno Kirby was born in New York City on April 28, 1949. His father, Bruce Kirby, was also an actor. Bruno's brother, John Kirby, became an acting coach. Bruno attended a school called Power Memorial Academy.

Bruno Kirby's Acting Career

Bruno Kirby had a long acting career that lasted 35 years. He was known as a "character actor." This means he often played interesting supporting roles instead of the main hero.

Early Roles and TV Appearances

His first movie was The Young Graduates in 1971. Three years later, he got a big role as a young Peter Clemenza in the famous crime movie The Godfather Part II. This role helped him become more recognized in Hollywood.

Bruno also appeared in many TV shows. He was in Room 222 and the first episode of M*A*S*H. He even acted alongside his father in a 1974 episode of Columbo.

Famous Comedy and Drama Roles

Bruno Kirby was great at playing fast-talking, sometimes a bit grumpy, but always likable characters. He often played people from New York City.

Some of his most famous roles include:

  • A talkative limo driver in This Is Spinal Tap.
  • The funny Lieutenant Hauk in Good Morning, Vietnam.
  • A helpful assistant in The Freshman.

He also took on serious roles, like a mobster in Donnie Brasco.

Working with Billy Crystal

Bruno Kirby often worked with actor Billy Crystal. They starred together in When Harry Met Sally... (1989) and City Slickers (1991). In both movies, Kirby played the main character's best friend. He decided not to be in City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold because he wanted some changes to the script.

Later Work in TV and Film

In 1991, Bruno Kirby performed on Broadway in a play called Lost in Yonkers. Later in his life, he did more TV work. He played a lawyer named Barry Scheck in the 2000 TV movie American Tragedy. He also appeared in the TV series Homicide: Life on the Street and even directed an episode of that show. One of his last TV appearances was in the show Entourage in 2006.

Bruno Kirby's Personal Life and Death

Bruno Kirby was a big fan of singer Frank Sinatra. He also enjoyed playing softball. A fun fact about him is that he was very allergic to horses. He needed daily allergy shots while filming City Slickers, which was one reason he didn't return for the sequel.

Bruno married Lynn Sellers on September 29, 2003. They were married until his death in 2006. Interestingly, he shared the same birthday, April 28, with his father, Bruce Kirby.

Bruno Kirby passed away on August 14, 2006, at the age of 57. He died from problems related to leukemia, which is a type of cancer that affects blood cells.
