This park wraps around three sides of a special lake named Brush Lake. The lake is quite large, covering about 280 acres, and it's also very deep, going down about 60 feet! What is the History of Brush Lake State Park?
How Brush Lake Became Popular
Long ago, in the early 1900s, Brush Lake was a favorite spot for people living nearby. They loved coming to the lake because its water was very clear and deep. It was fed by natural springs, making it a beautiful place to visit.
The First Resort at the Lake
In 1914, a man named Hans Christian Hansen decided to build a summer resort right on the lake. He had claimed land there, and soon his resort became a lively place. By 1920, a cafe and a bar were added for visitors. Later, in the 1940s, a dance hall was built, making it even more popular for gatherings.
When Did it Become a State Park?
In 2004, the state of Montana bought 450 acres of land around the north side of Brush Lake. This land was then turned into Brush Lake State Park. However, the southern part of the lake is still privately owned.
