The Bruton Museum is a small, interesting museum located in the town of Bruton, in Somerset, England. It's a great place to learn about the local history and culture of the area.

Where is the Museum?

The museum is found in a building called the Dovecote Building. This building is right on the town's High Street. Inside the same building, you can also find a tourist information office. This means you can get help planning your visit to Bruton and the surrounding area.

How the Museum Started

The idea for Bruton Museum began in 1989. A group called the Bruton Museum Society was formed. They worked with people in the community and local schools. Their goal was to collect and display items from Bruton's past.

At first, the museum was in the basement of a Co-Op store. Later, it moved to an old Coach House. This building used to belong to the National Westminster Bank. In 1999, the museum found its permanent home. The South Somerset District Council and Bruton Town Council bought the Dovecote Building together.

What You Can See

The museum has many items that tell the story of Bruton. It even remembers the time when famous American writer John Steinbeck lived in the town. He is known for books like The Grapes of Wrath.

The museum has also put on special art shows. For example, in 2008, they showed the work of artist Ernst Blensdorf. These exhibitions sometimes take place at King's School, Bruton.

Keeping the Museum Open

In 2010, there were some worries about the museum's future. But then, a kind person who wished to remain anonymous offered to help. This person agreed to pay the rent for the museum building. This generous gift made sure the museum could stay open for everyone to enjoy.
