Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Buckeye is a small, quiet place in Dickinson County, Kansas, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and people that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

The Story of Buckeye

Buckeye began as a special settlement, or "colony," many years ago. It was founded by a Universalist preacher named Vear P. Wilson. A Universalist preacher is a religious leader who believes in a faith that emphasizes universal salvation and the inherent goodness of people.

This new community grew quickly. By the year 1870, the Buckeye colony had almost 200 settlers living there. They even built their own church, which was an important gathering place for everyone.

Later, Buckeye had its own post office for a short time. It opened in 1900 and helped people send and receive mail until 1904. Having a post office was a big deal for small communities back then!
