Bulgarian Women's Union facts for kids
The Bulgarian Women's Union (in Bulgarian: Български женски съюз) was an important group that worked for women's rights in Bulgaria. It was active from 1901 until 1944.
This organization was started in 1901 by several pioneering women. These included Vela Blagoeva, Ekaterina Karavelova, Anna Karima, Kina Konova, Julia Malinova, and Zheni Pateva. It brought together 27 smaller women's groups that had already formed in Bulgaria since 1878.
The Union was created because women in the 1890s faced limits on their education. It was hard for them to go to university. The main goal of the Bulgarian Women's Union was to help women learn more and get involved in society. They held national meetings and used a newspaper called Zhenski glas (meaning 'Women's Voice') to share their ideas.
The organization stopped working in 1944 after the communist government took control of Bulgaria.
