About Bunnell Lewis

Bunnell Lewis was born in London, England, on July 26, 1824. He was the oldest of twelve children. He went to school at Islington and then studied at University College, London. He was a very good student, earning a special scholarship in "classics" (the study of ancient Greek and Roman language and culture). In 1847, he became a fellow at University College.

Teaching and Archaeology

In 1849, Bunnell Lewis became a professor of Latin at Queen's College, Cork. He taught there for a very long time, until 1905! He believed that studying archaeology should be a big part of university learning. To help with this, he collected many ancient art pieces and objects for the college's museum.

Lewis was very interested in archaeology from a young age. In 1860, he became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. This is a special group for people who study ancient things. He also gave lectures on classical archaeology (the study of ancient Greek and Roman cultures) at University College.

Discovering Roman History

Bunnell Lewis especially loved studying how Roman antiquities (old Roman objects and buildings) survived in different parts of Europe. During his summer breaks, he traveled to many countries like Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, and Turkey. He found many Roman objects and learned new things about their history. His discoveries helped people better understand old Latin writings. He wrote about his findings in a journal called The Archaeological Journal.

Bunnell Lewis passed away at his home in Cork, Ireland, on July 2, 1908. He left his collection of classical and archaeological books to University College, London. He also left money to create a special "Bunnell Lewis Prize." This prize is given to students who are good at writing original Latin poems and translating from Latin and Greek.
