Burg is a small, unincorporated community located in Bollinger County, Missouri, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town does. Burg is known for its unique name, which has an interesting story behind it.
How Burg Got Its Name
The name 'Burg' has a simple but funny origin story. When people were trying to decide what to call this new community, they were asked, "What shall we call this burg?" A 'burg' is an old-fashioned word for a town or settlement. Since no one could think of a better name, the suggestion 'Burg' was sent to the postal authorities. And that's how this little community got its name!
The Burg Post Office
For a short time, Burg even had its own post office. This post office was open from 1908 to 1910. It helped people send and receive mail in the community. Today, the exact location of this historical post office is not known. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which keeps track of place names, lists the Burg Post Office (historical) but notes its location as "unknown."
