The Burge House is a special old house found in Houston, Texas. It's considered a historic building, meaning it's important because of its age and unique style. This house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 1983. It's located in an area called Houston Heights, which was one of the very first planned neighborhoods in Texas.

About the Burge House

This house was bought in 1910 by Robert Burge, who owned a company called Burge Manufacturing Co. He paid about $2,000 for it back then, which was a lot of money at the time!

House Design and Features

The Burge House is a two-story building made of wood. It sits on a big corner lot, which means it has plenty of space around it. The roof is shaped like a pyramid, called a hip roof. It also has small windows sticking out of the roof, known as dormers, and pointed sections on the sides called gables.

A porch wraps around one side of the house. It's held up by strong half-columns that rest on brick supports. The porch has railings and small posts, called balusters, between the supports. Steps made of brick lead down from the porch to the ground.

The front door is quite fancy. It has tall, narrow windows on each side, called sidelights, and a window above the door, called a transom. Two windows are placed perfectly on either side of the front door, making the front of the house look balanced.

Architectural Style

The Burge House is a great example of how house styles changed over time. It shows a mix of older Colonial Revival architecture and newer styles that were becoming popular in the early 1900s. It even has some features that look like a bungalow, which is a type of house that was very common back then.

Recognition and Tours

Because of its unique history and style, the Burge House has been recognized as an important landmark.

  • On May 21, 1998, the Houston Archeological and Historical Commission decided the house was important enough to be named a Landmark of the City of Houston.
  • In 2010, it was officially listed among other designated City of Houston Landmarks.
  • In 2000, a company called Greenwood Properties bought the house to use as their office.
  • In 2006, the house was part of the Houston Heights Association's "Dickens in the Heights Home Tour and Holiday Market." This means people could visit the house and see its beautiful design during a special holiday event.
