History of Burlington, Texas
The first people to settle in the Burlington area were John and Michael Jones. They built their homes around 1867. At first, the community was called "Irish Settlement." This was likely because many early settlers were from Ireland.
In the 1880s, a Catholic Church was built in the area. When a post office was set up in 1884, the town's name was changed to Waterford. The post office was run from the home of Timothy Gleason. He was from Tipperary, Ireland. Mr. Gleason decided to change the town's name again. He named it Burlington, after Burlington, Vermont, a city he admired.
