Bury Hill is a special area in West Sussex, England. It is located north of Arundel and southwest of Bury. Long ago, in the 1700s, people sometimes spelled its name Berry or Bery Hill. This spot became famous for hosting exciting cricket matches.

Early Cricket Matches at Bury Hill

The first known cricket match at Bury Hill happened in June 1730. It was a big game between a team led by the 2nd Duke of Richmond and another team led by Sir William Gage. These were important people at the time.

Another notable match took place in August 1745. A team from Sussex played against a team from Surrey. This was the third game in a series between these two strong county teams. Bury Hill continued to be a cricket venue for many years. Records show matches were planned there as late as 1771 and 1774.
