This building was built way back in 1846 and is so special that it's a Grade II listed building. That means it's protected because of its historical importance.

You'll find the museum on Castlecroft Road, but the main entrance is on Bolton Street. It's a great spot to learn all about trains, buses, and other cool vehicles from the past.

A Journey Through Time: The Museum's Story

The Bury Transport Museum was started in 1973 by a group of dedicated volunteers from the East Lancashire Railway. These volunteers loved trains and wanted to share their passion with everyone.

  • 1973: The museum first opened its doors thanks to the volunteers.
  • 2003: It had to close for a while because of problems with the roof.
  • 2010: After lots of hard work, the museum reopened and welcomed visitors again!

Special Visitors: Famous Locomotives

The museum often hosts amazing and famous locomotives. These are like celebrity trains!

  • 2022-2023: For several months, the museum had a very special steam train on display: the LNER Class A4 4488 Union of South Africa. This powerful locomotive is famous for its speed and sleek design. It left the museum on April 21, 2023.
  • December 2023: Another exciting visitor arrived! This was the LMS 3-Cylindered Stanier 2-6-4T No. 2500. It came all the way from the National Railway Museum to be shown at Bury.
