The Baseball Journey of Butch McCord

Butch McCord was a talented baseball player who made a name for himself in different leagues. He played for several teams during his career. He was known for his strong hitting skills.

Playing in the Negro Leagues

Before 1947, many Black baseball players were not allowed to play in Major League Baseball. So, they played in their own professional leagues, known as the Negro Leagues. These leagues were full of amazing players.

Butch McCord started his professional baseball career in the Negro Leagues. He played for the Nashville Cubs and the Nashville Black Vols. Later, he joined the Baltimore Elite Giants, playing with them from 1948 to 1950. In 1950, he also played for the Chicago American Giants.

Moving to Organized Baseball

In 1951, McCord joined what was called "organized baseball." This meant he started playing in the minor leagues, which are professional leagues connected to Major League Baseball. He quickly showed how good he was at hitting.

In his first two seasons, he hit really well. He had a batting average of .363 in 1951 and an even better .392 in 1952. He led the Mississippi–Ohio Valley League in hitting both of those years. After a slightly less strong year in 1953, he bounced back in 1954. That year, he hit .358 and led the Western League in batting.

Overall, Butch McCord had a great hitting career. He finished with a .306 batting average. He collected 1,435 hits, including 279 doubles, 64 triples, and 89 home runs. He played in a total of 1,312 games.
