The Byecroft Farm Complex, also known as "Old Congress," is a very old and special farm. It is located in Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. This historic place includes a main house and several other buildings.

The oldest part of the main house was built way back in 1702. Over the years, more sections were added to it. The farm shows us what life was like many years ago in Pennsylvania.

What Makes Byecroft Farm Special?

Byecroft Farm is a great example of history. It helps us understand how farms and homes were built long ago.

The Main House: A Story of Time

The main house at Byecroft Farm has grown over many years. It started small and became larger with different additions.

  • The First Part (1702): The very first section was a one-story building. It was built in 1702.
  • The Central Block (1732): A larger, central part was added in 1732. This section is two and a half stories tall. It is made of strong fieldstone.
  • More Additions (1775): In 1775, the original 1702 part got a second story. Also, a new wing was built on the southwest side.
  • Later Expansions (around 1830 and 1934-1935): The southwest wing was made taller around 1830. Then, in the 1930s, another addition was built onto that wing.

The house is built in the Georgian style. This style was popular in the 1700s. It often features balanced and grand designs.

Other Buildings on the Farm

Besides the main house, Byecroft Farm has other important historic buildings. These buildings helped the farm run smoothly.

  • Old Bye Barn (around 1730): This barn is also very old and was important for farm work.
  • Carriage House / Studio (around 1775): This building likely stored carriages. Later, it might have been used as an artist's studio.
  • Two-Story Frame Barn: Another barn on the property, used for farm needs.
  • Small Carriage House / Cottage: A smaller building that could have stored carriages or been a small home.
  • Pumphouse and Well House: These buildings were important for getting water for the farm and people.

National Recognition

Byecroft Farm Complex is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This list includes places in the United States that are worth saving because of their history.
