The Byers–Evans House is a special historic house museum in Denver, Colorado. It's a place where you can learn about the past. Today, it is home to History Colorado's Center for Colorado Women's History. The house is also known as Evans House and is a Denver Landmark. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Civic Center Historic District.
A Look Back: History of the House
The Byers–Evans House was built in 1883. It was first owned by William Byers, who started the famous Rocky Mountain News newspaper. In 1889, he sold the house to William Gray Evans.
The house was built in the Italianate style. This style often features tall windows and decorative eaves. Over the years, new parts were added to the house.
William Evans lived in the home with his wife, Cornelia Lunt Gray. They had four children: John, Josephine, Margaret, and Katharine. In 1900, William's mother, Margaret Gray Evans, moved into the house. She was a former First Lady of Colorado. Her daughter, Anne Evans, who was unmarried, also moved in.
Members of the Evans family continued to live in this historic house for a very long time. They stayed there until 1981.
The Byers–Evans House was recognized as a historic place in 1970. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Later, in 1974, it was listed again as an important part of the Civic Center Historic District.
In 1981, the house was given to History Colorado. This gift included almost everything inside the house. Today, the house looks much like it did between 1912 and 1924. About 90% of the furniture, dishes, and other items are original family belongings.
