The Byers–Evans House is a historic house museum in Denver, Colorado. This means it's a real house from the past that has been turned into a museum for everyone to visit. Today, it is the home of the Center for Colorado Women's History.

The house is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which is the official list of special historic sites in the United States. It is also considered a Denver Landmark, a special honor given by the city.

History of the House

Byers-Evans House, Denver, about 1889
This photo from around 1889 shows the Byers–Evans House when the Evans family lived there. The house became the home of William Gray Evans in 1889. Later, his mother Margaret Gray Evans and sister Anne also moved in.

The Byers–Evans House has a rich history involving two of Denver's most important families. It was built in 1883 in a style called Italianate, which was inspired by Italian country villas.

The First Owner: William Byers

The house was first built for William Byers, who was the founder of a famous newspaper called the Rocky Mountain News. He was a very important person in early Denver.

The Evans Family Era

In 1889, Byers sold the house to William Gray Evans. William Evans was part of another powerful family in Colorado. He lived in the house with his wife, Cornelia, and their four children.

In 1900, William's mother, Margaret Gray Evans, moved in. She had been the First Lady of Colorado because her husband was the governor. William's sister, Anne Evans, also moved in. Anne was a famous supporter of the arts in Denver. The Evans family lived in this house for many decades, until 1981.

A Museum Today

In 1981, the Evans family gave the house and everything inside it to History Colorado, an organization that preserves the state's history. The house was carefully restored to look just like it did between 1912 and 1924.

When you visit, you can see about 90% of the original furniture, dishes, and other items that the Evans family actually used. It's like stepping back in time!

Center for Colorado Women's History

Today, the Byers–Evans House is home to the Center for Colorado Women's History. The center is a place for learning about the important roles women have played in Colorado's past. It offers tours, lectures, and exhibits to share these amazing stories. The museum is run by History Colorado and is located right behind the Denver Art Museum.
