Cármen Lúcia Antunes Rocha was born on April 19, 1954. She is a Brazilian judge and has been a member of the Supreme Federal Court since 2006. This court is the highest court in Brazil.
Cármen Lúcia is the second woman ever chosen to be a judge on this important court. She also served as its Chief Justice, meaning she was the main leader of the court. She is also a professor of Constitutional Law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. This type of law deals with how a country is governed.
She was chosen for her role by former President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Cármen Lúcia is known for her strong efforts to fight corruption. She also strongly supports women's rights in Brazil.

Her Important Roles
Leading Brazil's Courts
Cármen Lúcia has held many important positions in Brazil's legal system. She is currently the President of the Superior Electoral Court of Brazil. This court is responsible for making sure elections are fair.
She also served as the President of the Supreme Federal Court. This was from September 12, 2016, to September 13, 2018. During this time, she was the top judge in the country.
A Temporary President
For a short time, Cármen Lúcia even served as the temporary President of Brazil. This happened on April 13, 2018. The actual President and other leaders were out of the country. So, she stepped in to lead for one day.
Taking on New Roles
When Cármen Lúcia became the head of the Supreme Federal Court, she replaced Ricardo Lewandowski. Another senior judge, José Celso de Mello Filho, welcomed her to the role. He spoke about the importance of fighting corruption. In 2018, Dias Toffoli took over from Cármen Lúcia as the president of the court.
