José Antonio Dias Toffoli was born on November 15, 1967. He is a Brazilian lawyer and an important judge. He has been a member of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil since 2009. The President at the time, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, chose him for this role. Toffoli also served as the president of the Supreme Federal Court from 2018 to 2020.

Early Life and Education
José Dias Toffoli was born in Marília, a city in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1967. His parents are Luiz Toffoli and Sebastiana Seixas Dias Toffoli.
Studying Law
He went to the law school at the University of São Paulo. He studied there from 1986 to 1990. He earned a bachelor's degree in law. While he was in college, Toffoli was the leader of the student union.
Teaching and Early Career
From 1996 to 2002, Toffoli taught law. He was a professor of constitutional and family law at Centro Universitário de Brasília. In 1994 and 1995, he tried to become a judge in São Paulo. However, he did not pass the exams both times.
Working for the Workers' Party
Toffoli then worked as a legal representative for the Workers' Party (PT). He helped with the presidential campaigns of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 1998, 2002, and 2006.
From 2001 to 2002, Toffoli was a co-owner of a law firm called Toffoli & Telesca Advogados. Later, from 2005 to 2007, he co-owned another firm, Toffoli & Rangel Advogados. In 2007, President Lula chose Toffoli to be the Attorney General of Brazil. This is a very important legal position in the government.
Becoming a Supreme Court Justice
On September 17, 2009, President Lula nominated Dias Toffoli for a seat on the Supreme Federal Court. Toffoli was the Attorney General of Brazil at that time. The seat became open after Justice Carlos Alberto Menezes Direito passed away.
Confirmation and Appointment
After being nominated, Toffoli resigned from his role as Attorney General. The Senate then approved his nomination. He officially became a Justice on the Supreme Court on October 23, 2009. He was 41 years old at the time. This made him one of the youngest people to become a Supreme Court Justice since 1988. He was the eighth person President Lula nominated to the Supreme Court.
Leading the Supreme Court
On September 13, 2018, Justice Toffoli became the president of the Supreme Federal Court. He took over from Justice Cármen Lúcia. The vice president of the court during his term was Luiz Fux. Toffoli served as president until September 10, 2020.
