José Antonio Dias Toffoli, born on November 15, 1967, is a Brazilian lawyer. He has been a member of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil since 2009. This is the highest court in Brazil. He was chosen for this important role by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Toffoli also served as the president of the Supreme Federal Court from 2018 to 2020.

Who is Dias Toffoli?
Early Life and Education
José Dias Toffoli was born in Marília, a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, in 1967. His parents are Luiz Toffoli and Sebastiana Seixas Dias Toffoli.
He studied at the University of São Paulo's law school. He attended from 1986 to 1990 and earned a bachelor's degree in law. While in college, he was the president of the student union. From 1996 to 2002, he taught law at Centro Universitário de Brasília.
Becoming a Lawyer and Public Servant
In 1994 and 1995, Toffoli took exams to become a judge in São Paulo. He then worked as a legal representative for the Workers' Party (PT). He helped with the presidential campaigns of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 1998, 2002, and 2006.
From 2001 to 2002, Toffoli co-owned a law firm called Toffoli & Telesca Advogados. Later, from 2005 to 2007, he co-owned another firm, Toffoli & Rangel Advogados. In 2007, President Lula appointed him as the Attorney General of Brazil. The Attorney General is the chief legal advisor to the government.
Joining the Supreme Court
On September 17, 2009, President Lula nominated Dias Toffoli to join the Supreme Federal Court. This happened after a Justice named Carlos Alberto Menezes Direito passed away. After being nominated, Toffoli stepped down as Attorney General.
The Senate, which is part of Brazil's government, confirmed his nomination. Toffoli officially became a Justice on October 23, 2009. He was 41 years old at the time. This made him one of the youngest people to become a Supreme Court Justice since 1988. He was the eighth person President Lula nominated to the Supreme Court.
Leading the Supreme Court
On September 13, 2018, Dias Toffoli became the president of the Supreme Federal Court. He took over from Justice Cármen Lúcia. During his time as president, Luiz Fux served as the court's vice president. Toffoli's term as president ended on September 10, 2020.
