History of Cuautla Football Club
Early Years and Promotion
The Cuautla football club started its journey in 1952. They joined the Segunda División Profesional, which was the second-highest football league in Mexico at the time. In the 1953-54 season, the team played really well and finished as the runner-up.
Because more teams were joining the top league, the Primera División de México, a special playoff was held. Cuautla got to play in this playoff. They competed against two other teams from the Second Division and two teams from the First Division that were struggling.
The goal of the playoff was to decide which teams would play in the First Division. Cuautla played their best and earned a spot in the top league! This was a huge achievement for the club.
Playing in the Top League
After their promotion, Club Deportivo Cuautla played in the First Division for four years. This was a very exciting time for the team and its fans. However, in the 1958-59 season, they were relegated back to the Second Division. This means they had to move down to a lower league.
Close Calls and Recent Times
Even after being relegated, Cuautla kept trying to get back to the First Division. They came very close two times! Once in the 1971–72 season and again in 1978–79. Both times, they played in important promotion matches but unfortunately lost to Atlas.
Since their last time in the First Division in 1959, the club has mostly played in the Segunda División Profesional. They have been playing in this league on and off over the years. In recent times, they have been part of the Liga Premier, specifically in the Serie B.
