The C.T. Hayden House, also known as "La Casa Vieja" (which means "The Old House"), is a very old and important building in Tempe, Arizona. It is the oldest building that people still use in the Salt River Valley, often called "The Valley of the Sun." This house was built in 1873 by Charles T. Hayden, who was the person who started the city of Tempe. It is also famous because Carl Hayden, a well-known politician, was born there.

The C.T. Hayden House: A Historic Home
Early Days: The Hayden Family Home (1874-1889)
The C.T. Hayden House became the home of Charles T. Hayden after he moved from Tucson. When it was first built, the house had 13 rooms and was designed in the Mexican adobe style. By 1876, two more rooms were added. Later, the house was made even bigger with six more rooms on the main floor and a new second story with two rooms. After the Hayden family moved out in 1889, the house was used as a boarding house until 1924.
From Home to Restaurant: La Casa Vieja (1924-2014)
In 1924, the house was changed into a restaurant. Workers removed the second story and carefully fixed up its original adobe-style features. At first, Sallie and Mary Hayden owned the restaurant. They sold it in 1930. The house was then owned by several different people. In 1954, Leonard Monti bought the restaurant. He renamed it Monti's La Casa Vieja. The restaurant stayed open until 2014, when it closed its doors.
The Hayden House Today (2020)
By the summer of 2020, the Hayden House was almost completely restored. It was brought back to how it looked in 1924. This restoration was done by Hensel Phelps as part of a bigger building project nearby. The city of Tempe will then buy the Hayden House for $10. This will be the first time the city officially owns this historic site.
