The C. A. Lawton Company building, now called the Historic Lawton Foundry, is a very old and interesting building located in De Pere, Wisconsin. It has a long history and has been an important part of the city for many years.
Discovering the Historic Lawton Foundry
This building was once a busy factory. It helped make many things that people used every day. Today, it has a new life as a place where people live.
From Factory to Homes: A Building's Journey
The building started its life in 1879. It was home to a company called Novelty Mfg. Co. This company was a general machining business. This means they made different kinds of machine parts and tools.
The business was owned by Charles A. Lawton and his uncle, E. W. Arndt. Charles Lawton's family continued to run the company for a very long time. They kept the business going all the way into the 1970s.
After many years as a factory, the building changed. It was carefully updated and turned into apartments. Now, people live in the very same place where machines once hummed!
Why is it Historic?
Because of its long history and its importance to the area, the building was recognized as a special place. It was added to the State Register of Historic Places in 1991. The next year, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a building that is important to the history of the entire country.
