Challakere Kareem Jaffer Sharief (born November 3, 1933 – died November 25, 2018) was an important Indian politician. He was a senior leader in the Indian National Congress party. From 1991 to 1995, he served as the Railways Minister for the Government of India. This means he was in charge of all the trains and railway systems in the country.

A Look at His Political Career
Jaffer Sharief began his journey in politics with the Indian National Congress party. He started working under a leader named Nijalingappa. Later, when the Congress party split into different groups, he chose to support Indira Gandhi.
Making Railways Better
As the Minister of Railways in the 1980s, Jaffer Sharief played a big role in improving India's railway system. One of his most important projects was called gauge conversion.
What is Gauge Conversion?
Imagine train tracks come in different widths. In India, there were many different track widths, which made it hard for trains to travel everywhere. Jaffer Sharief helped change most of these different tracks to one standard width, called broad gauge. This made it much easier for trains to move across the country. It also helped the railways save a lot of money.
He also helped set up the Wheel and Axle Plant in Bangalore. This factory makes parts for trains, which is very important for keeping the railway system running smoothly.
His Later Life
C. K. Jaffer Sharief passed away in Bengaluru on November 25, 2018. He was 85 years old. He is remembered for his contributions to India's railway system and his long career in public service.
