Rudraiah's Film Career
Starting in Film Direction
Rudraiah studied economics at St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirapalli. After that, he decided to follow his passion for films. He earned a special diploma in film direction. This training helped him learn how to make movies.
Aval Appadithan: A Special Film
His very first movie as a director was Aval Appadithan (1978). This film was a big hit because its story and conversations were different. It stood out from many other Tamil films of that time. The movie used shadows and close-up shots to show feelings. It also used quick scene changes called Jump cuts.
Many people thought Aval Appadithan was a very important film. It is seen as a milestone in Tamil film history. Famous Indian filmmaker Mrinal Sen even said the film "was far ahead of the times."
Later Projects and Challenges
After his first success, Rudraiah made another film called Gramathu Athiyayam (1980). This movie told a story set in a simple village in Tamil Nadu.
However, it became difficult for Rudraiah to keep making films. The film industry was changing a lot. Audiences started to prefer movies with big stars. This made it hard for directors like Rudraiah, who focused on different kinds of stories.
He tried to start several new projects. One film, Raja Ennai Mannithuvidu, began filming in 1982. It was about two brothers and starred Kamal Haasan. But the film was never finished. The songs made for it by Ilaiyaraaja were later used in other movies.
Rudraiah also planned other films, like Unmayai Thedi and TXT7. TXT7 was a "road movie" about a taxi driver. Even though these films had good ideas and talented people involved, they faced money problems and were put on hold.
By 1990, Rudraiah started directing films for other producers. He worked on a love story called Kadalpurathil. This project later became a television film and was shown on Doordarshan.
Rudraiah's Passing
