A Look Back: The Bank's Story
Building the Bank
This grand building was finished in 1880. It was built for the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. The architects were Mansfield Bros, and the builders were White and Coghill from Sydney. When it was first built, a local newspaper called The Kiama Independent and Illawarra and Shoalhaven Advertiser said it would be "one of the principal ornaments of Kiama." This shows how important and beautiful it was considered.
Changes Over Time
The CBC Bank used this building until about 1969. Then, the bank moved to a new location on Terralong Street. After the bank left, the building was used for other things. In 1979, the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Roslyn McKinnon, wanted to protect the building. They asked for a "Permanent Conservation Order." This order helps keep important buildings safe for the future.
At that time, a lawyer's office was in the front part of the building. A vet's office was in the back. The upstairs area was rented out as a flat. The owners hoped that protecting the building would help them with taxes.
Becoming a Heritage Site
In 1981, the Heritage Council agreed to protect the building. A Permanent Conservation Order was officially placed on the property on July 17, 1981. This was a big step in making sure the building's history was preserved.
Later, on April 2, 1999, the building was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This is a special list of places that are important to the history and culture of New South Wales. Today, the building houses an IT company called DropPoint.
What the Building Looks Like
The former CBC Bank building is a large, impressive two-storey building. It was designed in a style called "Italianate." This style was popular for banks and often featured grand looks. The ground floor was where the bank did its business. The bank manager lived in a home on the first floor.
The building is made of brick and covered with a smooth finish. Its roof is made of slate. Even after many years and different uses, the building still has many of its original details. This includes the special woodwork and other features from when it was first built.
Why It's a Heritage Site
The former CBC Bank building was built in 1880. It was designed by Mansfield Bros for the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Ltd. It's a great example of the large and impressive Italianate-style banks that Mansfield Bros designed. The building still has many of its original features and details.
This building is located next to the old Bank of New South Wales building, which was also designed by Mansfield Bros. It's also close to the Kiama Post Office and other old shops and public buildings. Because of this, the former CBC Bank is a very important part of Kiama's town. It helps us remember the town's elegant past.
