How CKKI-FM Started

CKKI-FM began broadcasting in December 2009. At first, it operated on 106.7 FM without a full license. This frequency was previously used by another local radio service.

On September 29, 2011, the station received an official license. This license came from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The CRTC is a group that manages broadcasting in Canada.

What CKKI-FM Offers

The CRTC licensed CKKI-FM as a station that broadcasts in two languages. These languages are English and Mohawk. The station is located in the sovereign territory of Kahnawake.

CKKI-FM provides 126 hours of local programming each week. Most of this time, 120 hours, is dedicated to country music. The remaining 6 hours feature spoken word and talk shows. A small part of this programming, 5%, is in the Mohawk language. The rest is in English.

The station aims to support local artists. It plans to feature and sponsor music and concerts by Mohawk and other Native artists.

Public Alerting System

The CRTC also asked CKKI-FM to add a Public Alerting System. This system helps share important public safety messages. It is designed to inform listeners during emergencies.
