A Look Back: How it Started
The Grand Central Art Center is located in a building that has a cool history. It was first built way back in 1924! The city of Santa Ana bought and fixed up this old building, spending about $7.5 million to make it new again. This amazing project even won three awards for its design!
The art center has a clever way to pay for its daily needs. It earns money by renting out some of its spaces. For example, a restaurant and classrooms are rented to different businesses. Also, students from California State University, Fullerton who are studying art can rent apartments and studios here. This helps the center keep going!
Who Leads the Art Center?
Many talented people have helped lead the Grand Central Art Center over the years. Here are the directors who have guided the center:
- Andrea Lee Harris (1998 - 2008)
- Dennis Cubbage (2008 - 2010)
- Mike McGee (2011; interim)
- John D. Spiak (September 2011 – Present)
What Can You Find Inside?
The Grand Central Art Center has many different areas for art, learning, and living.
Student Homes and Artist Studios
If you're a graduate student at California State University, Fullerton studying visual or performing arts, you might get to live here! There are 27 apartments available for these students. One special apartment is kept for an "artist-in-residence." This means a visiting artist can live there while they work on their art. There's also a large studio space, about 800 square feet (74 square meters), just for this visiting artist.
Art Galleries and Exhibitions
The center has two main art spaces: the Grand Central Gallery and the Project Room. These galleries show off amazing art and projects by artists from all over the world. They usually feature four to six new art shows each year in each space. It's a great way to see different kinds of art!
The Center's Theater
Right in the middle of the art center, there's a theater. It's designed so the audience sits all around the stage, which is called "in-the-round." This theater can hold about 85 people. A theater company called The Wayward Artist puts on plays and performances here.
