The California State University, Fullerton Grand Central Art Center is a special place where art, education, and the community come together. It's a partnership between California State University, Fullerton and the city of Santa Ana. You can find it in the Downtown National Register District, also known as the Artists Village. It's a hub for creative minds!

Discovering the Art Center's Past

The Grand Central Art Center is located in a building that was first built in 1924. The city of Santa Ana bought this old building and spent about $7.5 million to make it new again. This big project was very successful and even won three awards for its amazing design.

The center has a smart plan to help it pay for itself. It earns money to cover its daily costs. For example, the restaurant, classrooms, and other areas are rented out to different businesses. Also, apartments and art studios are rented to graduate students from CSU Fullerton. This helps the center keep running and support its programs.

Leaders of the Art Center

The Grand Central Art Center has had several directors who have guided its journey:

  • Andrea Lee Harris (1998 - 2008)
  • Dennis Cubbage (2008 - 2010)
  • Mike McGee (2011; interim)
  • John D. Spiak (September 2011 – Present)

Exploring the Art Center's Spaces

The Grand Central Art Center has many different areas for art, learning, and performances.

Student Living and Art Studios

There are 27 apartments available for students. These are for students who are studying visual and performing arts at the university. One of these apartments is set aside for a special "artist-in-residence" program. This means a visiting artist can live and work there for a period. This artist also gets a private studio space that is about 800 square feet (74 square meters) to create their art.

Art Galleries and Exhibitions

The center has two main art spaces: the Grand Central Gallery and the Project Room. These galleries show art and projects by famous artists from all over the world. They usually present four to six new art shows each year in both spaces. This means there's always something new and exciting to see!

The Center's Theater

A theater is located right in the middle of the art center. It's designed so the audience sits all around the stage. It can hold up to 85 people. A theater company called The Wayward Artist uses this space to put on plays and performances.
