Ca la Pruna - Baix Empordà
Ca la Pruna, a historic house in Pals

Ca la Pruna is a special old house from the 1500s. It's like a small castle, built to be strong and safe. You can find it in the town of Pals, which is in the Baix Empordà region of Spain. This building is so important that it's listed in the official list of Catalonia's amazing old buildings.

What is Ca la Pruna?

Ca la Pruna is built on a rocky hill. This means it fits right into the natural shape of the land. The building has a ground floor, two floors above that, and a roof made of tiles. It's a great example of old Spanish architecture.

The History of Ca la Pruna

Ca la Pruna used to be called Mas Illa. It was one of the most important houses in Pals for many years. The Illa family lived there starting in the early 1400s. They were known for growing and selling rice. Old papers even show that there was a rice mill right inside the house!

The house was damaged by fire in 1833 during a war called the First Carlist War. It was also changed a lot when it was fixed up in the 1970s. Even with these changes, you can still see parts of the original walls from the Middle Ages. You can also see additions made between the 1500s and 1700s.

Later, three people from Pals – Antoni Vila Casas, Francesc Jover, and Xavier Millet Tusell – bought the building. They gave it to the town of Pals. Their gift helped turn it into a special place for culture.

Ca la Pruna: A Culture Museum

After the Town Hall of Pals received the building, they created the Ca la Pruna Culture Museum. It's now a busy place where many fun and educational activities happen.

Permanent Exhibitions

The museum has a main exhibition called "Viure a pagès." This means "Living in the Countryside." It shows many items used in farming long ago. You can see old farm tools, different ways people measured things, and learn how animals helped on the farm. It also shows what the rooms in a traditional Catalan farmhouse looked like.

Activities and Events

During the summer, Ca la Pruna hosts art shows. You can see paintings, sculptures, and pottery. In the winter, they organize other cultural events. These include talks, classes, movie nights, and meetings for local groups. It's also the home for two important local groups: the Comunitat de Regants (a group for rice farmers) and the Associació per a la Defensa Vegetal de l'Arròs (a group that helps protect rice plants).
