Ca la Pruna - Baix Empordà
Ca la Pruna

Ca la Pruna is a cool old building from the 1500s. It's a special kind of house called a fortified house, which means it was built to be strong and protect people. You can find it in the town of Pals, in a beautiful area of Spain called Baix Empordà. This historic house is so important that it's officially listed as part of Catalonia's architectural heritage.

What is Ca la Pruna?

Ca la Pruna is built on a strong, rocky base. This means it fits perfectly with the natural ups and downs of the land around it. The building has a ground floor, two floors above that, and a classic tile roof. It's a great example of old Spanish architecture.

The History of Ca la Pruna

Ca la Pruna used to be known as Mas Illa. It was one of the most important houses in Pals during medieval times and later. The Illa family lived here starting in the early 1400s. They were famous for growing and selling rice. Old papers even show that there was a rice mill right on the ground floor of the house!

Changes Over Time

Sadly, the building was burned during the First Carlist War in 1833. Later, in the 1970s, it was repaired and changed quite a bit. Even with these changes, you can still see parts of the original walls from the Middle Ages. There are also signs of additions made between the 1500s and 1700s.

A Gift to the Town

Later, three people from Pals named Antoni Vila Casas, Francesc Jover, and Xavier Millet Tusell bought the building. They were very generous and gave it to the town. Their idea was for it to become a special place for culture.

Ca la Pruna: A Culture Museum

After the Town Hall of Pals received the building, they turned it into the Ca la Pruna Culture Museum. It's now a busy cultural center where lots of fun activities happen.

Permanent Exhibitions

One of the main things you can see there is a permanent exhibition called "Viure a pagès." This means "Living in the Countryside." It shows many items related to farm life. You can see old farm tools, different ways people measured things, and learn how animals were used. It also teaches you about the different rooms in a traditional Catalan farmhouse.

Activities and Events

  • During the summer, the museum hosts cool exhibitions. You can see paintings, sculptures, and even pottery.
  • In the winter, they organize different cultural events. These include talks, classes, movie nights, and meetings for other community groups.
  • Ca la Pruna is also the home base for two important local groups: the Comunitat de Regants (a group for irrigation) and the Associació per a la Defensa Vegetal de l'Arròs (a group that protects rice plants).
