How Did the Passage Get Its Name?

The Caamaño Passage was named after a brave Spanish explorer named Jacinto Caamaño. He was the commander of a Spanish exploration ship called the Aranzazu. In 1792, Caamaño and his crew explored this very coast. It was common for explorers to name places after themselves or important people from their journeys.

Later, a British captain named Frederick C. Learmonth officially surveyed Zayas Island. During his survey, he formally named the strait "Caamaño Passage" to honor Jacinto Caamaño's earlier explorations. Captain Learmonth was in charge of a ship called HMS Egeria when he did this important mapping work.
