The Cactus and Succulent Society of America (often called CSSA) is a special group for people who love succulent plants. These are plants that store water, like cacti! The society is based in Pasadena, California, in the United States. It helps people learn about, grow, and protect these amazing plants.

History

The CSSA started way back in 1929. It began in Los Angeles County, California. Since then, it has grown a lot! Now, it has over 80 smaller clubs connected to it. Thousands of members from all over the world are part of the CSSA.

The main goal of the society is to enjoy succulent plants. They do this through gardening, traveling to see plants in nature, and scientific discoveries. A very important part of their work is protecting the places where these plants grow naturally, especially in deserts around the world.

The CSSA is a non-profit organization. This means it uses all its money to support its goals, not to make a profit.

What the CSSA Does

The Society helps everyone who loves cacti and succulents. This includes both hobby growers and plant experts. They offer support through education, protecting plants, and scientific research. They also give out grants to help with research projects.

Activities and Events

The CSSA does many things to achieve its goals:

  • It publishes a magazine called The Cactus and Succulent Society Journal. This comes out four times a year.
  • They also publish a more scientific book called Haseltonia. This book comes out once a year.
  • The society holds an Annual Show & Sale in Pasadena, California. Here, people can see and buy many different cacti and succulents.
  • Every two years, they organize a big International Convention. This event happens in a different place each time.
  • Members can go on special Field Trips. These trips visit the natural homes of cacti and other succulents.
  • The CSSA Seed Depot sells seeds of cacti and succulents to members.
  • They work to protect cacti and other succulent plants. This helps keep these species safe in the wild all over the world.
