The Cady-Copp House is a very old and special house in Putnam, Connecticut. It was built around 1745. This house is a great example of how homes looked long ago in the American colonies. It hasn't changed much since it was built! Because it's so old and well-preserved, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
A Glimpse into the Past: The Cady-Copp House
The Cady-Copp House is located in a quiet area called Putnam Heights. You can find it on the east side of Liberty Highway. It sits back from the road in a wooded spot.
What Does the House Look Like?
This house is a 1-1/2 story building made of wood. It has a special roof called a gambrel roof. This type of roof has two different slopes on each side. The house also has a chimney right in the middle.
The inside of the house is almost exactly as it was in 1745. It doesn't have modern things like plumbing or electricity. The front of the house has an interesting design. The main door is on the right side. There are windows next to the door and another window on the left side. On the left side of the house, there's another door inside a small, gabled entryway.
The Story of the Cady-Copp House
The area around Putnam Heights was first settled in 1708. The Cady-Copp House was built sometime between 1741 and 1750. Joseph Cady built it for his daughter, Damaris.
Damaris was marrying Perley Howe, who was a minister. After Perley Howe passed away, Damaris married the next minister in the area. Later, Damaris's son, Sampson Howe, sold the house. It was bought by the David Copp family. The Copp family owned the house for many years, until the late 1800s. In 1992, the house was given to the local historical society. This means it is now protected and can teach us about the past.
