Caerfanell facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Caerfanell is a beautiful river located in Wales. It starts high up in the middle of the Brecon Beacons National Park in an area called Powys.

The river begins on a flat, high area known as Gwaun Cerrig Llwydion. From there, it flows steeply downhill towards the southeast. It then turns east and northeast, eventually flowing into the Talybont Reservoir. After the reservoir, the river comes out from under the dam, near the village of Aber. It then flows north until it joins another river, the River Usk, near the small village of Llansantffraed.

Smaller streams that flow into the Caerfanell are called its tributaries. Some of these are the Nant Bwrefwr, Nant Tarthwynni, Clydach, and Cwy.

Exploring the Caerfanell River

You can walk alongside much of the Caerfanell River on special paths. These paths include parts of the Beacons Way and the eastern loop of the Taff Trail.

The highest parts of the river are in open countryside, which means they are easy for walkers to explore. Further down, near a place called Blaenyglyn, the river flows over a series of waterfalls. These waterfalls are a very popular spot for visitors, especially in both summer and winter!
