Cahit Aral was an important figure in Turkish politics and engineering. He became famous for his role as a government minister. He also played a part in founding a major political party in Turkey.

Early Life and Education

Cahit Aral was born in 1927 in Elazığ, a city in Turkey. His parents, Fatma and Hakkı Aral, were both primary school teachers. He was named after a famous Turkish writer and journalist, Hüseyin Cahit Yalçın. Aral studied engineering at the Istanbul Technical University. This is one of Turkey's oldest and most respected universities.

Stepping into Politics

After working for several years in different industries, Cahit Aral decided to enter politics. He became one of the people who helped start the Motherland Party (ANAP). This party was formed after a big change in Turkey's government in 1980. He later became the Minister of Industry and Commerce. He served in the government led by Prime Minister Turgut Özal.

The "Don't Worry!" Moment

Cahit Aral is most remembered for something that happened after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. This was a serious accident at a nuclear power plant. It released some harmful substances into the air. People in Turkey were worried about their tea, especially in the Black Sea Region. This area is famous for its tea farms.

To show people that everything was okay, Cahit Aral drank a glass of tea on television. He told everyone, "Don't worry!" He wanted to calm fears about any possible health risks from the accident. Because of this moment, people gave him the nickname "Bekerel Cahit." This nickname linked him to the scientific unit for radioactivity, the Becquerel.

Later Life and Legacy

Cahit Aral passed away on November 1, 2011, in Istanbul. He was 84 years old. His death was due to heart failure. He was buried at the Zincirlikuyu Cemetery after a state funeral. Many people attended his religious funeral service at Levent Mosque.
