Her Early Life and Training
Cal Lane was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1968. She grew up on Vancouver Island. When she was younger, she learned two very different skills: hairdressing and welding. Welding is a way to join metal pieces together using heat. Later, she went to college to study art. She earned degrees from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the State University of New York at Purchase.
Her Amazing Art
Cal Lane's art is unique. She uses special tools like a plasma cutter or an oxy-acetylene torch. These tools create a very hot flame or stream of plasma. She uses them to carefully cut detailed patterns into big, heavy steel objects. Imagine cutting lace patterns into a thick steel beam!
