Caladenia applanata is a special type of plant. It belongs to the orchid family and is found only in the south-west part of Western Australia. When a plant or animal is found only in one specific area, it is called endemic.
This orchid has a single, upright leaf that feels a bit hairy. It can grow up to three beautiful flowers.
Discovering the Orchid
Scientists officially named and described this orchid in 2001. The people who did this were Stephen Hopper and Andrew Brown. They published their findings in a science journal called Nuytsia.
Different Kinds of Flowers
In the same paper, Hopper and Brown also described two different types, or subspecies, of Caladenia applanata:
- Caladenia applanata subsp. applanata has flowers that can be red, cream, green, or yellow.
- Caladenia applanata subsp. erubescens has pretty pink flowers.
