The Calahorra Tower (Spanish: Torre de la Calahorra) is a strong, old building in the historic center of Córdoba, Spain. It's a type of fortified gate. This tower was first built a very long time ago by people from the Islamic world. It stands proudly near the famous Roman Bridge.
History of the Calahorra Tower
The Calahorra Tower was first built by the Almohad Caliphate. This was a powerful group of people who ruled parts of Spain and North Africa. They built the tower to protect the important Roman Bridge. This bridge crosses the Guadalquivir River.
How the Tower Was Built
The tower is located on the left side of the river. When it was first built, it had an arched gate. This gate was placed between two main towers. Later, a third tower was added. This new part connected the first two towers. It was shaped like two cylinders. This made the tower even stronger and more impressive.
Protecting a Landmark
The Calahorra Tower is a very important historical building. In 1931, it was officially named a national historical monument. This means it is protected by the government.
In 2014, the tower received a special award. It won the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage. This award was for the great work done to restore the tower. The nearby Roman Bridge and the Gate of the Bridge also received this honor.
