Calamar is a town and municipality located in the Bolívar Department in northern Colombia. It sits right on the Magdalena River, which is a very important river in Colombia. Calamar is also found at the start of the Canal del Dique, a special waterway.

History of Calamar

Calamar was founded during Colombia's republican period. This was a time when Colombia was becoming its own independent country. The town was established under the government of General Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera.

When Was Calamar Founded?

The first people to settle in Calamar arrived in the year 1840. They chose a large, flat area to build their homes. This area was between a swamp called "Swamp of the Blacks" and the big Magdalena River.

Original Name of Calamar

When the first settlers arrived, the place was not called Calamar yet. It was first known as Gamarra. Later, its name was changed to Calamar.

The Magdalena River
