California Points of Historical Interest facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

California Points of Historical Interest are special places, buildings, or events that are important to the history of a local area, like a city or county. These places can be significant for many reasons, such as their culture, architecture, or even science.

It's important to know that these "Points" are different from California Historical Landmarks. Landmarks are places that are important to the history of the entire state of California, not just a local area. A place cannot be both a Point of Historical Interest and a Historical Landmark at the same time. If a Point later becomes a Landmark, its Point designation is removed.

Points of Historical Interest that were chosen after December 1997 and approved by the State Historical Resources Commission are listed in the California Register of Historical Resources. This register helps keep track of California's important historical places.

What Makes a Place a Historical Point?

To be chosen as a California Point of Historical Interest, a place must meet at least one of these rules:

  • It was the very first, last, or most important of its kind in that local area (city or county).
  • It is connected to a person or group who had a big impact on the history of the local area.
  • It is a great example of a certain time period, building style, or construction method. It could also be one of the best works by a famous architect or builder from that local region.
