Discovering the Californian Rabbit
The Californian rabbit is known around the world. It is one of the most popular rabbit breeds raised for meat. People also appreciate its beautiful fur, which makes it a "fancy breed" – meaning it's admired for its looks and can be shown in competitions.
How the Californian Rabbit Was Created
A man named George S. West started developing this special rabbit breed in 1923. He lived in Lynwood, California. Mr. West wanted to create a rabbit that was excellent for both meat and fur.
He carefully bred different types of rabbits together. He started with New Zealand Whites, which are known for their good meat. Then, he crossed them with Standard Chinchilla rabbits to get their thick, soft fur. Finally, he added Himalayan rabbits to give the Californian its unique dark markings.
The first Californian rabbits were shown to the public in 1928. The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) officially recognized the breed in 1939. This meant the Californian rabbit had its own special standards.
What Californian Rabbits Look Like
Californian rabbits have a distinctive appearance. They are mostly white with dark "points." These points are dark markings on their nose, ears, feet, and tail.
Colors and Markings
The most common and original color for Californian rabbits is white with dark brown or black points. This is the "standard" color recognized by the ARBA. However, other organizations, like the British Rabbit Council (BRC), recognize more colors. The BRC accepts Californian rabbits with chocolate, blue, or lilac colored points, in addition to the standard dark ones.
Size and Weight
These rabbits are medium to large in size. The BRC suggests a desired weight of about 4.3 kilograms (9.5 pounds). They accept rabbits weighing at least 3.4 kilograms (7.5 pounds). The ARBA allows Californian rabbits to weigh up to 4.7 kilograms (10.5 pounds). This makes them sturdy and well-built rabbits.
Why Californian Rabbits Are Special
Californian rabbits are highly valued for several reasons. They are excellent for meat production and also have beautiful, dense fur.
Fast Growers and Good for Meat
One of the main reasons Californian rabbits are so popular is their ability to grow quickly. They produce large families, usually having 8 to 12 baby rabbits, called kits, in each litter. These kits grow very fast! They can reach a good size for meat (around 1.8 to 2.3 kilograms or 4-5 pounds) in just 8 to 12 weeks. They also have a good amount of meat compared to their bone size.
Their Soft Fur
Californian rabbits have a thick, soft, and plush coat of fur. This quality makes them not only useful for their meat but also beautiful to look at. Their fur is dense, meaning it's very full and soft to the touch.
