Calixto Oyuela (born 1857, died 1935) was a famous Argentine poet and essayist. He was known for his beautiful poems and strong writing.

Calixto Oyuela first trained to be a lawyer. After working as a lawyer for a few years, he decided to become a teacher and a literary critic. This means he wrote about and judged books and poems.

He traveled around Europe and became part of Argentina's diplomatic team. He quickly became known as a very smart person and a great scholar. He taught Spanish Literature at the National College of Buenos Aires. He also led the National Conservatory and the Spanish Academy of Language.

Calixto Oyuela was chosen as the first president of the Academia Argentina de Letras, which is like a main academy for writers in Argentina. He also led the Ateneo de Buenos Aires. During his life, many people thought Calixto was one of Argentina's best scholars. He played a big part in bringing new cultural ideas to the country.

Calixto Oyuela's Famous Works

Calixto Oyuela is still one of Argentina's most celebrated poets. Some of his famous poems include "Art Canto" (from 1881), "Eros and Songs" (from 1891), and "Songs of Autumn and Night." His poems were often lyrical, meaning they had a musical quality. They mixed classical styles with romantic feelings.

However, Oyuela became even more famous for his strong prose writing. Prose is like regular writing, not poetry. Some of his most well-known prose works are Literary Theory Elements of Argentina (1880) and Notes On Spanish Literature. His book Latin American Poetry Anthology won the National Prize for Literature in 1919. This was a very important award.

Oyuela also started and directed the Scientific Literary Magazine. He was a leader in the cultural and literary world of Argentina. He was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy in Spain. He also served as president of the Academy of Arts of Argentina.
