Callan Chythlook-Sifsof, born on February 14, 1989, is an American Olympic snowboarder. She has been competing in snowboard cross since 2005. Callan is a member of the Yupik and Inupiaq peoples. She made history as the first Alaskan Native to compete in the Olympic Games.

Early Life and Alaskan Roots
Callan Chythlook-Sifsof grew up in Alaska. She lived in Aleknagik, a small fishing village, and Dillingham. Later, she moved with her mom to Girdwood. This move helped her be closer to the Alyeska Resort. Being closer to the resort meant she could train more easily. Callan is from the Yupik and Inupiaq Eskimo communities.
Snowboarding Career Highlights
Callan started making a name for herself in snowboarding. In 2006, she was invited to her first Winter X Games. This is a big competition for extreme sports. She later won a silver medal there in 2011.
National and World Cup Success
In 2007, Callan won the U.S. National Championships. This event took place in Tamarack, Idaho. The next year, in 2008, she won the Jeep King of the Mountain World snowboard series. Her best results in the World Cup were third place in Japan in 2006. She also earned a second-place finish in Switzerland in 2011. A knee injury kept her from competing in 2009.
Olympic Journey
On January 26, 2010, Callan was chosen for the U.S. Winter Olympic Team. She competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics. This was held in Vancouver, Canada. She placed 21st in the snowboard cross qualifying round. She did not advance further in the competition. Still, it was a special moment. She was the first Alaskan Native to ever compete in the Olympics.
Injuries and Retirement
In 2012, Callan had two top-ten finishes in World Cup events. However, another knee injury stopped her season early. After several knee surgeries, she decided to retire from snowboarding. This was in 2014, after her knee was injured again.
Advocacy and Recognition
In February 2014, Callan shared something personal. She publicly stated that she is gay. She did this to support protests against anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Russia. The 2014 Winter Olympics were happening in Sochi, Russia, at that time. Callan wanted to show that it is important to stand up for what is right. She said it was important to show the world that unfairness is not okay.
Callan's bravery has been recognized. In 2022, she was named Outsports’ Female Hero of the Year. This award celebrates athletes who inspire others.
