Callao is a small place in Northumberland County, Virginia, United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

Callao is located along U.S. Route 360, which is also called the Northumberland Highway. You can find it northwest of Heathsville and east of Warsaw.

How Did Callao Get Its Name?

The name "Callao" has an interesting story! It comes from the first Postmaster, Jacob Callaway. He started the post office in 1893.

Mr. Callaway wanted the post office to be named after himself. However, there was already a town called Callaway in Virginia. To make it different, he simply dropped the "way" from his name and added an "o." That's how "Callao" was born!
