Calvander is a small, quiet community in North Carolina, United States. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's an "unincorporated community." This means it's a place where people live, but it's part of a larger county, Orange County, rather than having its own mayor or town council. You can find Calvander in the southeastern part of Orange County, just north of a town called Carrboro. It's located right where two roads meet: Old Highway 86 and Homestead/Dairyland Road.
How Calvander Got Its Name
Calvander got its unique name from a person! It's a shortened version of "Calvin Andrews." Calvin Andrews was an important person in the 1800s. He started a school called Andrews Academy. This schoolhouse was located very close to where the main roads cross today.
Calvander in the Past
Back in 1891, a map showed that Calvander was a busy little community. It had a saw mill, which is a place where logs are cut into lumber. There was also a post office, so people could send and receive mail. And, of course, there was a store where people could buy things they needed.

Today, Calvander is still a quiet crossroads. If you visit, you'll find a gas station there. It's a reminder of the community's long history and how it has changed over time.
