Calvin Carl "Kelly" Gotlieb was a very important Canadian professor and computer scientist. Many people call him the "Father of Computing" in Canada. He helped start the world of computers in Canada. He taught computer science at the University of Toronto.

Early Life and Education

Kelly Gotlieb was born in Toronto, Ontario, on March 27, 1921. He studied at the University of Toronto. He earned several degrees there. These included a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1942. He also received a Master of Arts in 1944. Finally, he earned his Ph.D. in 1947.

Building Canadian Computing

Kelly Gotlieb played a huge role in bringing computers to Canada. In 1948, he helped create the first computer center at the University of Toronto. This team was the first in Canada to build computers. They also offered computer services to others.

He also started the first university courses on computing in Canada. The first course began in 1950. In 1951, he offered the first advanced course for graduate students. Later, in 1964, he helped start the first computer science department for graduate studies at the University of Toronto. This was a big step for computer education in Canada.

Important Contributions

Kelly Gotlieb helped create the Canadian Information Processing Society in 1958. This group helps people who work with computers. He was even its president from 1960 to 1961.

He received many important awards for his work. In 1995, he became a Member of the Order of Canada. This is one of Canada's highest honors. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. This means he was recognized as a top scholar. In 2006, he became a founding Fellow of the Canadian Information Processing Society. In 1994, he received the International Federation for Information Processing Isaac L. Auerbach Award. He was also recognized by the Association for Computing Machinery.

Family Life

Kelly Gotlieb was married to Phyllis Gotlieb. She was a Canadian writer of science fiction and poetry. They were married in 1949. Phyllis passed away in 2009. They had three children together: a son named Leo, and two daughters, Margaret and Jane.

Kelly Gotlieb passed away in Toronto on October 16, 2016. He left behind a great legacy in Canadian computing.
