Early Life and Education
Calypso Botez was born in 1880 in a city called Bacău, Romania. She went to the University of Iasi and finished her studies there.
Teaching and Leadership Roles
Later, she moved to Bucharest. In Bucharest, she worked as a teacher in a high school. She also helped check on other schools. She became the leader of the Red Cross in Galati. This organization helps people in need.
Fighting for Women's Rights
In 1917, Calypso Botez helped start a new group. It was called the Romanian Women's Union (UFR). She started it with friends like Maria Baiulescu, Ella Negruzzi, and Elena Meissner. This group worked for women's civil and political rights.
Calypso Botez wrote many books and articles. She often wrote about women's rights. She pointed out that Romania's constitution said all citizens were equal. She believed this should include women too.
In 1919, she published a book called The Problem of the Rights of the Romanian Woman. She worked to change government rules and divorce laws. She also pushed for more rights for women. In 1920, she published another book, The Problem of Feminism. In 1921, she helped create another important group, the National Council of Romanian Women.
