Maria Baiulescu (born August 21, 1860 – died June 24, 1941) was a very important Romanian woman. She was a writer, and she worked hard for women's rights. She believed that women should have equal chances and a strong voice in their country. She was also a leader who wanted to keep Romanian culture alive and strong.

Early Life and Education

Maria Baiulescu was born in a city called Brașov in 1860. Her father, Bartolomeu Baiulescu, was a priest. Her mother, Elena Baiulescu, was already a leader for Romanian women.

Maria was lucky to get a good education. She went to a special school for girls called the Girls French Institution. After finishing school, she started her career as a writer. At first, she translated texts from other languages. Soon, she began writing for a large book called the Enciclopedia Romana. She also wrote plays for a group that helped create Romanian theater.

Working for Women and Romania

Later in her life, Maria became a speaker and writer for a group that promoted Romanian literature and culture. From 1908 to 1935, she was the President of the Romanian Women's Reunion in Brașov. This was a very important role.

While she was president, Maria started another group called the Union of Romanian Women. This group helped women work together to achieve common goals. She also helped fund an orphanage for girls. This orphanage taught girls important daily skills.

Maria strongly believed that women should be at the forefront of the Romanian national movement. She thought that only women could truly protect and preserve Romania's identity as a nation. She also worked to improve care for young children, making sure they had basic hygiene. Maria wanted to keep Romanian culture unique and different from other countries.

She fought hard for women to have the same rights as men. She founded an organization called the Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women. This association helped women learn about and use their political rights.

Maria Baiulescu continued to fight for women's rights until she passed away on June 24, 1941.

Legacy

Today, a technical college in Brașov is named after Maria Baiulescu to honor her important work.
