Calytrix depressa is a cool shrub that belongs to the Myrtaceae family, which also includes plants like eucalyptus. This plant is special because it only grows naturally in the southwest part of Western Australia.

What Does Calytrix depressa Look Like?

This plant is usually a shrub, growing between 0.2 and 1 meter tall. Sometimes, it can even reach up to 2 meters high.

Leaves and Flowers

Its leaves are long and thin, like small cylinders. They are usually about 1 centimeter long. The base of each leaf is a bit flat. This flat base is why it's called depressa, which means "flattened" in Latin.

In summer, the plant gets covered in many beautiful flowers. Each flower is about 1 to 1.3 centimeters wide.

  • Plants from the northern areas have pink to light purple outer petals.
  • These northern flowers have a bright yellow center, which looks really nice.
  • Plants found in the southern areas have flowers that are completely yellow.

The petals of Calytrix depressa are wider than those of many other Calytrix species. Also, the green parts under the petals, called calyx lobes, have long pointy tips. These tips stick out far beyond the petals.

Growing Calytrix depressa

If you want to grow this plant, it needs a special spot. It likes soil that is moist but also drains water away well. It also prefers sunlight that is filtered, not too strong and direct.

How to Plant It

You can start new Calytrix depressa plants in two ways:

  • From cuttings: This means taking a small piece of the plant and helping it grow roots.
  • From seeds: Growing from seeds can be a bit tricky, but the plants that grow this way are usually stronger.

Plant Health

Sometimes, in hot and humid places, these plants can get a problem called root rot. They might also get tiny bugs called scale.

Where Does Calytrix depressa Grow?

This special shrub is found in two main plant regions in Western Australia. These are the Southwest Botanical Province and the Eremaean Botanical Province.
