History of Camaná
Camaná has a very interesting past. It was an important place for the Spanish when they first arrived in Peru.
Founding of Villa Hermosa
In 1539, the Spanish founded a settlement here. They called it "Villa Hermosa," which means "Beautiful Town." This happened on November 9, 1539.
Camaná's Role in Arequipa's Beginnings
Just one year later, in 1540, the Spanish moved to the valley of Arequipa. Camaná was like the first home or "crib" for the city of Arequipa. This shows how important Camaná was in the early days of Spanish settlement in the region. It was a rich and large valley, perfect for a new town.
