A Look Back in Time
The Battle of Camarón
Camarón was once an old Totonac town called Temaxcal. A very important event happened here at a large farm, known as the hacienda Camarón. On April 30, 1863, a small group of 65 soldiers from the French Foreign Legion fought against a much larger Mexican Army of over 3,000 soldiers. The Mexican Army won this battle.
How the Town Got Its Name
After the famous battle, the words "de Tejeda" were added to the town's name. A Mexican Colonel named Francisco de Paula Milán did this to honor a politician named Adalberto Tejeda Olivares. He was born in Chicontepec and lived from 1883 to 1960.
Before its current name, the town was known by other names. In 1927, it was called Villa Tejeda. Later, in 1955, it was known as Adalberto Tejeda.
Where is Camarón de Tejeda?
The town is located in the central part of the Veracruz. You can find it at 19° 01’ north latitude and 96° 37’ west longitude. It sits at an altitude of 320 meters (about 1,050 feet) above sea level.
The Hacienda Camarón
The Hacienda Camarón is a historic farm located near the road from Mexico City. It has a large courtyard in the middle, which is about 50 meters (164 feet) on each side. A tall wall, about 3 meters (10 feet) high, surrounds this courtyard. There are two big doors that open to the west.
The part of the building on the north side is next to the road. It has many rooms that were used for living, all lined up from east to west.
To the south of the courtyard, there are two large storage rooms. One of them is still mostly in good shape. The other one, which is at a southwest angle to the courtyard, is mostly made of wood pieces supported by a brick wall, with a thatched roof. Across from it, at a southeast angle, are the remains of another storage room. This one also had a brick wall that used to support its structure.
On the very south side of the Hacienda, the last storage room has a space that people can walk through.
Across the road from the Hacienda, there are two old, damaged houses and the ruins of ten old Indian boxes.
