Camasarye II Philoteknos (Greek: Καμασαρύη Φιλότεκνος, romanized: Kamasarye Philoktenos), also known as Comosarye, was an important queen of the Bosporan Kingdom. This kingdom was an ancient state located around the Black Sea. She was part of the Spartocid family, who were the rulers of this kingdom.
Camasarye ruled from about 180 BC to 160 or 150 BC. She was the daughter of King Spartokos V. She married her cousin, Paerisades III, and they ruled the kingdom together.
Becoming Queen
Camasarye's name might have come from an older queen named Comosarye. This earlier queen also married her cousin, who was named Paerisades.
When Camasarye's grandfather, Leucon II, died, she was too young to become queen. So, a powerful leader named Hygiaenon took charge. He was an Archon, which was like a chief magistrate, and probably a regent. A regent is someone who rules for a young king or queen until they are old enough.
Hygiaenon ruled until 200 BC. After that, Camasarye's father, Spartokos V, became king. He ruled the Bosporan Kingdom until 180 BC.
Her Time as Queen
Camasarye became queen in 180 BC. She was very active in the kingdom's politics. Her name appears in many old writings. For example, she and her husband Paerisades were honored in Delphi, a famous ancient Greek city. They were praised for how well they treated visitors and foreigners in their kingdom.
At some point during her rule, Camasarye took the special name "Philoteknos." This name means "children-adoring." It probably showed how much she loved her children. She had two sons with Paerisades III: Paerisades IV and Paerisades V. These sons later became the last kings of the Bosporan Kingdom from the Spartocid family.
Later, before 160 BC, Camasarye married a man named Argotes. He might have been a Scythian prince. The Scythians were a group of nomadic people who lived near the Bosporan Kingdom.
Who Ruled Next
Camasarye's oldest son, Paerisades IV, became king after her in 150 BC. He took the name "Philometor," which means "mother-adoring." This name likely showed his strong bond with his mother, Camasarye.
Later, in 125 BC, Paerisades IV was followed by his brother, Paerisades V. Paerisades V was the very last ruler from the Spartocid family in the Bosporan Kingdom.
