The Cammeray Substation is a special old building in Cammeray, New South Wales, Australia. It's an electrical substation, which means it helps manage electricity for homes and businesses. This building was constructed in 1915. It's also known as the Substation - Bellevue, Cammeray or #77 Pine Street. Because it's so important, it was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means it's protected for future generations to see.

History of the Cammeray Substation

The Cammeray Substation, sometimes called the Pine Street substation, was built in 1915. It was designed specifically for its job of handling electricity. You can even see the year "1915" and the words "ELECTRIC LIGHT SUB-STATION" carved into the front of the building. This building is a cool example of structures from the early 1900s.

What the Substation Looks Like

The Pine Street substation is a unique and tall building with two floors. It's made of bricks and stands back a bit from the street. The front of the building, called the facade, looks a bit uneven. It was designed in a style called "Interwar Gothic." This style was popular between the two World Wars.

The building has a "tower" part that looks like an old castle, complete with crenellations (the notched tops you see on castle walls). There's a big arched doorway on one side and a round window on the other. Look closely and you'll see rounded-top walls, called gable parapets. There's also a fancy plaque above a smaller entrance with "Art Nouveau" style letters.

The substation is built with strong brick walls. It also uses brick arches for support. The details are made with cement. It has a steel roller shutter, which is like a strong metal door.

Condition of the Building

As of November 13, 2000, the building was in good condition.

Why the Substation is Important

The Pine Street substation is considered very important because it's an unusual and rare example of a well-designed building from the Interwar Gothic period. It shows how buildings were made with detailed brickwork and cement decorations back then.

The Cammeray Substation was officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This listing helps protect its unique history and architecture for everyone to enjoy.
